Project Food Blog: Ready, Set, Blog!

UPDATE: VOTING IS NOW OPEN!
Please go vote for me HERE!

Number One & Me, Cafe' Premier, Paris
August 2010

Back in January 2008, my friend Shell and I were chatting about recipes. What if I created a recipe-sharing website, and invited all my friends to join and contribute their recipes? And with that, The Bad Girl’s Kitchen was born.

I created the site as a place everyone can come and post their favorite recipes...to share with friends, to encourage experimentation, to enjoy cooking for our families. It is my hope that each of us will find new family favorites, have some fun, and maybe even learn something in the process!

The Bad Girl’s Kitchen started out as me and Shell, typing up and sharing some of our favorite recipes. Since then, it has grown to include 30 members, some of whom I don’t even know, and features almost 600 recipes (and counting!) I’ll never forget how exciting it was to get a comment from someone who wasn’t my mom! BGK was quickly noticed by Foodbuzz, who became the blog’s first sponsor, and I became a Foodbuzz Featured Publisher.

Now, Foodbuzz is hosting this challenge. Project Food Blog is the first-ever interactive competition where thousands of Foodbuzz Featured Publishers are competing in a series of culinary blogging challenges for the chance to advance and a shot at the ultimate prize: $10,000 and a special feature on Foodbuzz.com for one year.

YOUR votes will help make my advancement in this challenge possible!

I don’t have to tell you what an exciting opportunity this is! I do, however, have to tell you more about me and my blog, so here goes.

I was born and raised in Northern Lower Michigan. Some of my earliest memories are of food—eating food, watching food being prepared in my mom’s, grandmas’ and aunts’ kitchens, and eventually helping prepare that food in those kitchens. My mom has never been afraid to try a new recipe, and neither have I. I’ve even been known to try new recipes when I have a boatload of guests coming!

I remember eating meals in the dining room at my friend Rene’s house; baking treats at sleepovers with my friend Kelly; exploring Polish and more gourmet cuisines across the street at my neighbors’ house; experimenting with ingredients and foods with my friend Jen, and I will be forever grateful to Jen’s mom for indulging us in our “concoctions” and actually tasting them without gagging. My food world expanded when I went to college, and I was one of few who actually used the dorm kitchen to prepare a few meals for my friends.

I moved to Utah in the early 1990’s, and am now married to a real, live cowboy, raising up two young boys. We live on my husband’s family’s cattle ranch in the remote red rock desert, literally in the middle of nowhere. We generate our own electricity and have absolutely no telephone service (not even cell service in the canyon). We are 35 miles from the nearest town, and the grocery store there is just a bit bigger than most convenience stores, which adds a special challenge to grocery shopping. Our nearest neighbors are more than 15 miles away, but they make a darn good milkshake. We raise cattle, have dozens of horses, three dogs, four cats, a small herd of chickens, and a couple lizards.

Some people couldn’t handle the isolation here, but we love it. It is the perfect place to raise our boys, and the scenery is spectacular every day. I have a garden every year, with vegetables and fresh herbs, and we have bountiful fruit trees which produce peaches, pears, apples, apricots and plums. I’ve followed in the footsteps of generations of women in my family, canning and freezing produce to provide for our families. I learned how to bake bread, and now store-bought loaves are a rarity in our house. We are doing our best to move to more local, less processed products (also a challenge in a small community).

I am a firm believer in moderation when it comes to food—no food should be completely off-limits, just don’t eat it every day!

I have collected recipes from most members of my extended family, and am working to assemble a family cookbook. Many of the recipes on the website are family favorites that I simply couldn’t wait to share! I cook everything from meals for my family and birthday cakes, to elaborate party foods and gourmet or ethnic dishes.

The Bad Girl’s Kitchen has encouraged me to explore more foods with my family. My boys, H-Bomb, age 7, and Sawed Off, age 4 ½, help in the kitchen frequently, and have their own small cookbook collection. Their reactions to the foods we eat are an important part of the blog, although we sometimes disagree. Our recent family trip to France has expanded my food horizons even more, and I’m excited to learn more about French cuisine and share it with my readers!

I’ve also become acquainted with many new blog friends, too many to list them all here! Taste & Create is now a big part of my life, and I’m a weekly contributor at Our Krazy Kitchen, where my theme is “Try A New Recipe!” The Bad Girl's Kitchen even has a Facebook fan page!

I have many hobbies, including photography, jewelry making, gardening, hiking, quilting and tons more, but a girl’s got to eat. Cooking will always be a big part of my life, and I’m happy to be able to share it with everyone. It’s my love of recipes, of family, of friends, that I’d like to share as the next food blog star.

To reiterate what I said in my Project Food Blog Profile, the most rewarding thing about blogging is the friends I have made along the way; the recipes I've collected, been given, and stumbled across; sharing those recipes with others, and the encouragement I've received from total strangers. Food bloggers form a very diverse and supportive community, and I'm happy to contribute to this delicious world.

Please don’t forget to VOTE FOR ME!

And let me know what you think of the recipes here!

The Paris Chronicles: 1st Meal!

Some of you just might recall that we recently went to Paris!!! Really, this would have to be your absolute first visit to my blog to not be aware of that fact.

We had an amazing trip! A week in Paris, then a train ride and rental cars to the French countryside for another week at our friend's country house. Fabulous! It was my little family, including me, Number One, H-Bomb and Sawed Off, along with Grandpa & Mary, and of course our friend Jean-Claude.

While I don't have very many actual recipes from our trip (aside from the traditional country cookbooks I picked up at a grocery store in the country), I did EAT A LOT. I promised I would share the food with you, so here goes!

Our plane landed in Paris about an hour ahead of schedule at 10:30AM, which means after we found our luggage, Jean-Claude found us and we rode the RER into the city, walked a few blocks to our hotel and checked in, it was past time for lunch! We stopped at Jean-Claude's studio (across the street from our hotel), where he made a call to a friend of his who owns a cafe, because it was getting to be mid-day closing time for most cafes and shops, and they agreed to Stay Open Just For Us! Incredible.

We walked through the neighborhood to the cafe, just a few blocks from our hotel. I regret that I was too tired to take a photo of the front, or even notice the name of the place, but I did take a couple photos of the menus, which were on the walls around the cafe.

And as you can see, we really did have the place all to ourselves! (that's our table in the back, behind the stairs)

Jean-Claude picked a house wine, I believe it was a merlot, and it was wonderful after the long flight. It was just so lovely to be in Paris!

I chose the Salade Folle de Canard, which was a scrumptious salad with thin slices of duck and cubes of fried pork on top. It was fabulous!

Number One and Grandpa both had the Salade Mouegasque, which featured warm herbed goat cheese in a spectacular pastry bundle on top of zucchini.

I don't remember what Mary and the boys ate, but I do remember my luscious dessert: Profiteroles! (very soon you will see a recipe on the blog for these babies, because I ate a LOT of them, and I know how to make them!)

Au Revoir...

Just a note to let you all know that I'll be gone for a few weeks...can you guess where? The whole family, me, Number One, H-Bomb, Sawed Off, even Grandpa & Mary are heading to France to visit our dear friend Jean-Claude. We are beyond excited.

We'll be in Paris for about a week (the picture above is NOT from our hotel), then we'll travel by train into the country in the South of France, where we'll stay in Jean-Claude's country house, walk to the village, play with the neighbor's goats and eat some of the neighbor's cheese (I hope).

While I won't be blogging, I will be eating fabulous food and drinking fabulous wine and taking lots of hopefully fabulous pictures! I'll tell you all about it when we return, in mid-August.

In the meantime, enjoying perusing the hundreds of recipes already at The Bad Girl's Kitchen, leave a comment and tell me what you think, and stay tuned for fabulous blog posts upon our return!

CSN Stores Giveaway!

I didn't feel like there were enough entries to use the random number generator thingie, plus there were a couple comments that didn't count anyway, so I just took a few minutes and wrote everyone's name and comment number on a piece of paper, folded them up, and put them in a big bowl. I shook them up, swirled them around, then had H-Bomb pick one piece of paper out of the bowl above his head...

And the Lucky Winner is:

#2, Cheryl, who said, "
Hmmm, the possibilities are endless but I'm thinking dessert - Sour Cream or Yogurt Coffee cake - it looks deep enough to serve a chicken or pasta dish as well. Maybe Martha's One pot chicken & brown rice."

Congratulations, Cheryl!
Contact me to claim your prize!
I'm soooo looking forward to a coffee cake and/or chicken or pasta served on a lovely platter!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry, contest is closed!
Thanks to everyone who entered!!
I was approached by Sean at CSN stores, who asked if I'd like to review a product for them or host a giveaway on the blog. As hard as it was to turn down something new for MY kitchen, I thought it would be more fun to give you all a chance to WIN something for YOUR kitchen!
The amount of products CSN stores offers is staggering...featuring everything from counter stools to chandeliers, grills to swing sets, on over 200 different websites, they have it all!
We have some counter stools very similar to these surrounding the new bar in our kitchen, and we actually purchased our kitchen pendant lights from CSN. Who knew someday I'd get to share this company with you!
As difficult as it was to narrow down a product to giveaway here, I stuck with cookware. A weakness of mine is serve ware, so that's where I headed. Serving bowls, platters~even everyday food looks great if it's served on a nice dish.
I chose something that I would want to have and use in my home (actually took a poll of a few close friends to help with the decision!) to give to you~ a beautiful serving tray!
In addition to being lovely, this tray is 13" in diameter, with built-in handles. It's made of authentic European stoneware, using a traditional hand-painted technique known as Bunzlauer. Tiny sponges saturated with food-safe ceramic paint are hand stamped on pre-fired pieces. The process often requires over 10 types of sponges for each item.
The pieces are then covered with lead-free glazes and fired at 2200°F, assuring long-lasting beauty and protection. Durability and resistance permit safe microwave, oven, and dishwasher use, as well as resistance to chipping.
Would you like to win this serving tray?
  1. Just leave a comment to tell me what you'd serve on it if I were coming over for dinner!
  2. If you'd like an extra chance to win, and you really love this blog, become a follower via Google Friend Connect (or mention that you're a follower) and let me know in a separate comment on this post.
  3. For another extra entry, become a fan on facebook (or mention that you're a fan) and tell me in a separate comment on this post.
  4. For another extra entry, blog about this giveaway with a link back to this post (and leave me a comment here with a link to your post!)
The rules:
  • Sorry, contest is only open to residents of the US and Canada.
  • The giveaway will end on Friday, March 26th, at midnight MST. Winner will be chosen randomly.
  • I will email the winner, who will have 48 hours to respond by email, or I will have to choose a different winner.
  • Please leave your email address on each comment/entry, or make sure your profile is public. If I can't contact you, you can't win!
  • Please don't become a follower or fan if you don't really want to follow the website.
  • I did not receive any compensation for this post. I was simply approached by CSN, and chose to pass the offer on to my readers!
Good luck to all!
BGK: Celebrating Two Years of Fabulosity!
Today's the day! Can't believe it all started two years ago, over coffee and an IM with Shell..."what if I made a recipe blog, and we could get our friends to join and contribute?" The two of us began uploading recipes like crazy, making sure each recipe "category" was represented...from my Baked Fudge Cake to Shell's Cranberry BBQ Pork, it just grew and grew and now over 400 fabulous recipes live here!
We have grown to 24 members, 17 of whom have contributed recipes! We have over 40 followers on google, and our own facebook page with almost 100 fans!
I couldn't have done it without each and every one of you.
Thank you for your support and encouragement,
your friendship and your recipes!
~Min
It's never too late to join the fun! If you'd like to join us here on Bad Girl's Kitchen and contribute recipes of your own, just leave a comment with your email address and I'll send you an invitation! (read this post for more information)
A New Bad Girl Endeavor!
Just after Christmas, this Bad Girl took on a new endeavor. After a Guest Host spot on OuR KrAzy kItChEn in early December, I was asked if I was interested in hosting a weekly post.
How could I resist? That, my friends, is how Try A New Recipe Day was born. Each Tuesday, I'll post a recipe over on OuR KrAzy kItChEn. It may be an old, beloved recipe, or something brand new, you never know (and neither do I!)
There are NINE different themes over there at the kItChEn, so there's something new almost every day!
So, go on over and:
Taste & Create!! May - September 2009
By now you all know how much I love the Taste & Create event, a monthly food blog event created and hosted by my lovely friend Nicole of For the Love of Food. Food bloggers are randomly paired off, and asked to choose a recipe from their partner's blog, create it, and blog about it. Results are featured on the fabulous Taste & Create website. It is a great way to meet new blog friends, learn new recipes & techniques, and is just plain fun. Sometimes, I am even lucky enough to guest-host the event.
I look forward to Taste & Create every month, and yes, I'm actually sad if I can't participate! Last summer, I even participated during our vacation to Michigan, where I created a fabulous fish recipe on my dad's new grill.
Well, guess what? Nicole is having a baby, and has asked me to host Taste & Create from now until September! If you'd like to participate during the months of May to September, please email me each month you'd like to at cowgirlmin07 [at] gmail [dot] com. Go here for sign up information. The sign up deadline each month is the 8th, I look forward to hearing from you.
Congratulations, Nicole!! I'll do my best! And I can't wait to see pictures of the little one!
